Recently I painted a quote in the library. When I am feeling lost, I always come back to Neil Gaiman’s poem Instructions. The beautiful fairy tale allusions remind me that my problems are not too large. I put my favorite verse on the wall.

The thing is, is that although this verse is great for allowing us inner peace, the whole poem is a great tool. Some days I need to remember that “giants sleep too soundly” and that I shouldn’t antagonize. Other days I need to remember that “dragons have one soft spot” and “that hearts can be well hidden and you betray them with your tongue.”

Here is a lovely Youtube video narrated by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Charles Vess:

Everyone has something that helps them find their center. Some may find it in the outdoors, others find it in literature, others in music. What matters is that you spend time to think about what centers you.
